Genetic purity evaluation of cereal seeds produced in Fars province in control Plots

Abstract

Control plots are being accomplished to evaluate seed purity and seedborn diseases of seed lots produced in the country. To evaluate 498 wheat seed lots in three groups of breeder, basic and certified seed, the seed samples were cultivated in control plots (24 m2, 24 row, 20cm space and 6 m, 5cm space between plants). To avoid spike deformation, weed was controlled by hand (without the herbicide application). Statistical analysis on different seed groups (breeder, basic, certified) and cereal cultivars (Chamran, Yavaroos, Behrang, Shiroodi, Line A. S-83-3, Nimrooze barelyو Bahar, Pishtaz, and Bam) showed that the seed purity in all thre groups followed the same trend. In all three seed groups, the highest purity was observed in breeder seeds while a lower purity was observed in the basic and certified seeds, respectively. The highest purity was observed in the older varieties of CHAMRN and YAVAROUS among the cereal cultivars. This is while a lower purity was measured in the new cultivars like BEHRANG.
